Week 2 Video: What is a Challenger Learning Center

What is a Challenger Learning Center?

In the video, I discuss why the Challenger Learning Centers are in existence and what they are.  This is the beginning of what I would like my final video project to be about, a Challenger Learning Center simulate space mission.  In this video I worked with voice overs, adding music on top of the voice over and including videos.  The sound on the video segments is not great and I am unsure of how to fix it exactly.  The volume is turned all the way so I'm wondering if it has to do with my video camera, a Flip.

Adding music over my voice of was also quite tricky.  What I did was save my initial movie with the voice over as a video.  Then I created a new project and added the music. Enjoy!

  1. Hi Anika,
I was moved by your video, the way you set the stage with how the Challenger Mission, actually the memorial to the crew, has inspired the creation of waaayy more than the original 7 Challenger Learning Centers. That was a story! You did an excellent job with your narration, confidently moving around the room to show what was there. Thanks!

  2. Great video! I was very impressed with the way you brought in all the aspects we were focusing on this week. Your voice over was clear and easy to follow. The faint background music was just enough to set a tone. You had an incredible amount of photos to share, having them change on a regular basis really kept the video moving along. The way you started your video with such a strong back-story, really helped the audience understand how and why the Challenger Space Stations exist. Thanks for sharing, I really learned something!

  3. I very much appreciate your video. I teach at Christa McAuliffe Middle School in northern Stockton. Every year in January, as close to the 28th as we can get, we do a memorial project about Christa McAuliffe, who she was, why she was important, and how she died a hero. I love that you included the history of the Challenger mission from that fateful morning, and in fact, I would love to add your video to the collection of videos that we show the kids on that day, especially since it centers on the legacy she left. The students here create artistic representations of Christa McAuliffe and answer the question: " What does it mean to be a hero ?" in the process.

    Thank You for sharing.

  4. Thank you for teaching us about Challenger Learning Centers - I did not know the connection. I like how you chose just the right photos to set up the story and make us care - and then put the positive memorial spin to the tragedy. You did a great job!

I'm suspecting that the microphone in the flip is just too small and too far from the audio source when recording - it is probably fine when you are holding it and narrating. Maybe there is a port to add an external mic?

  5. So... wow! You did an excellent job here. First of all, I learned something and I was captivated to keep watching. I thought you did a good job of introducing the story before brining in the learning centers. You also have a really great narrator/tour guide kinda thing going on, and your video looked and sounded very official. You did a great job combining all of the elements we were asked to, and I'm impressed! Your voice was lower during the recorded video part, but it was still clear and understandable. Great job!

  6. I think what you've got here is a very well done video that tells a clear story about how the centers came to be. I was a little disappointed that the video segment was so short and required me to jack the audio up to max to hear. I wanted to see more of the children's center video honestly and get a tour of that. Otherwise, great use of still images and a very nice voice over.

    1. Jeremy, I completely agree with you that the audio of the video segments is way off and I will be attempting to fix that in future video productions. I have a feeling it has to do with the Flip Video camera i used.

in regards to your comment about seeing more of the the kids working and getting a tour, that is coming. My final project is going to be and entire mission condensed into 15 minutes so you get a feel of what a mission is like. I couldn't steal my thunder on the second video of this class. It's just a taste of what's to come :)

  7. Nice work--very professional!Even with the sound problem it is clear that you know exactly what story you want to tell and you have the right blend of story telling and expertise on the subject.

  8. Great introduction to the center and tragedy that occurred. Good choices, image, narration, and background. As an introduction it worked well wetting our appetites for more detail...was that your goal?
